Signs It May Be Time to Consider Home Care for a Parent
Deciding to bring in help at home is one of the hardest, most personal calls a family makes. It rarely comes from a single moment, it’s usually a slow build of small things you start to notice. Here are the signs families in Calgary tell us they wish they’d acted on sooner.
Around the home
- Mail piling up, bills unpaid, or the fridge holding expired or very little food.
- The home is less tidy than it used to be, or laundry is going undone.
- Signs of small kitchen mishaps, scorched pots, forgotten stovetops.
Health and mobility
- Unsteadiness on the stairs, or a recent fall (or a “near miss” you only heard about later).
- Missed medications, or confusion about which pills to take when.
- Noticeable weight loss, or meals being skipped.
Mood and connection
- Withdrawing from friends, hobbies, or church.
- Seeming lonelier since a spouse passed, or since driving stopped.
- You’re feeling stretched thin yourself, that’s a sign too. Caring for a parent while working and raising a family is a lot, and running on empty helps no one.
How to start the conversation
Lead with love, not logistics. Try: “I want you to stay in your own home as long as possible, can we get a little help so that’s easier?” Frame care as something that protects independence, not something that takes it away.
You don’t have to figure it out alone. A free in-home assessment is just a conversation, no pressure, no sales pitch, to help you understand the options. Call (403) 830-9600 whenever you’re ready.
