Our Philosophy
What is Kapwa? The Filipino Value Behind Our Care
Our name isn’t an accident. Kapwa (kuh-PWA) is a Filipino value with no clean English translation. The closest we get is shared humanity, the recognition that the person in front of us is not separate from us. We see ourselves in each other.
More than a nice word
Kapwa isn’t a slogan on a wall. It’s the rule book for everything we do. It’s the difference between two very different kinds of care:
- Transactional care, impersonal, a different caregiver every other day, your loved one treated as another appointment on a calendar.
- Relationship-first care, built on trust, consistency, and genuine connection, where your caregiver knows your parent’s routines, stories, and preferences.
When we care for your Lola (grandmother) or Lolo (grandfather), they become part of our extended family. That’s kapwa in practice.
Care for everyone
While KapwaCare is proudly Filipino-led, our care is for everyone, and for adults of all ages, from a younger adult living with a disability, to someone in their 50s recovering from surgery, to a senior who wants to age gracefully at home. That cultural understanding isn’t just for one community; it’s a mindset of deep respect that benefits families from every background across Calgary.
Care that feels like family
At the end of the day, the care you receive in your own home should feel less like a service and more like family. That’s the promise behind our name.
